Not sure what to do in this gloomy winter weather, but you are into reading and fashion? Worry no more, here are my top three fashion books to get you through the last week of January. None of them are trendy, shorty books written by bloggers that are going strong these days, not that there's something wrong with those, I just think a real fashion book needs substance, not just tips for taking Instagram photos.

NJ Stevenson The Chronology of Fashion

A mix of everything a good fashion book needs: great photos and cleverly written texts that offer a sea of information, all followed by interesting fashion quotes. This is actually a guide through fashion history, from the France after the Revolution (birth place of empire dress) to contemporary fashion. I  wish it included older fashion eras as well, but it's only so much that can fit in one book.

''A dress cannot just hang like a painting on a wall, or like a book remaining intact and live a long and sheltered life.''
Elsa Schiaparelli

Icons of Fashion The 20th century

Also a great book about fashion history, but unlike the previous one it focuses more on certain phenomenons and groundbreaking moments (and designers). If you already know quite a bit of fashion history, but you want to study it further, this is the book for you.

''My vision: a nymph who, in her heart of hearts, is a leopardess''.
John Galliano

Fashion Now by  Terry Jones and Susie Rushton

Short and sweet, like similar Taschen publications, it offers a glimpse into the world of well known, as well as alternative designers. About some of them I never even heard before reading this book (and I know quite a lot about fashion).

''I believe in style not fashion.''
Ralph Loren

NJ Stevenson The Chronology of Fashion

Icons of Fashion The 20th century

''My vision: a nymph who, in her heart of hearts, is a leopardess''.

Fashion Now by  Terry Jones and Susie Rushton
