Halloween is getting closer so it's time for another costume inspiration. My sister loves going to costume parties and I love doing her makeup for any costume she picks. We thought it would be fun to do Calavera makeup and here are the result.
Calavera, or sugar skull is a representation of a skull made for Mexican holiday Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) that is celebrated on 31. of October and 1. and 2. of November. First day of celebration is the same date as Halloween and it became popular to dress as Calavera for Halloween.
There are many ways to do Calavera makeup, some people opt for doing dark vibe Calavera, but I thought it should be colorful and fun, the point of Mexican holiday is to celebrate spirit of ancestors, not in a dark way like many people represent it these days.
Again, like in Geisha makeup, I didn't use white face paint, instead I used NYX Jumbo eye pencil in Milk. Just paint your face with the pencil and use your fingers to blend. Cover the neck as well. Blot the white paint with shimmery white eyeshadow like Bourjois Little round pot eyeshadow in 90 Blanc Diaphane. It will keep the white in place, also you'll have a nice shimmery complexion. Now the fun part begins. Using the eyeshadow draw flowers and shapes to decorate the face. I used shades from Coastal scents Hot pots. Now is the time to be creative, draw any kind of flowers you want. I used blue eyeshadow to contour her face and I added a bit of blush to the cheeks. Draw circles around eyes and fill them in with black gel eyeliner. I used Maybelline Eye Studio lasting drama Gel eyeliner . Over the eyeliner apply shimmery dark blue eyeshadow. Draw flower petals around the eye circles with red eyeshadow. Then use light blue eyeshadow to draw bones on the neck. Some people paint lips white when they do Calavera makeup, but I thought makeup would look nice with red lips, it's up to you. After you are done with all the colouring, use black pencil eyeliner (I used Avon Supershock Gel Eyeliner Pencil) to draw outlines for everything you just draw. After that with the same eyeliner draw two lines in the extension of your lips and couple vertical lines over the lips and reversed heart on the tip of the nose. If you want to make your hair look gray use white eye pencil to colour the hair. Last step is to accessorize with flowers and jewelry, add Calavera appropriate clothes and you are ready to go!
