Oh, so many hair removing techniques and yet no way for the hair to be completely gone. As someone who has dark, strong hairs, I had my share of waxing, tweezing, shaving, bleaching and an attempt at epilating. Truth to be told you have to find a method that works the best for each body part. And you have to stick with it! Otherwise you will fight a constant battle with ingrown hairs. My troubles with ingrowns on the legs started when I begun switching between shaving and occasional waxing. Not a good idea! Like I said, pick one method and stick with it.
In the sea of different options for the longest time I avoided sugaring. If you never heard of it, it's a (fairly) simple technique where melted sugar is used to remove the hairs (much like wax). There were a couple of reasons that made me hesitant to try it. First of all I thought it's very complicated and that you have to make your own sugar paste from scratch. I did think about not doing it at home and going to the salon instead, but I didn't know any good salons that do it and was pretty happy with a salon where I went for waxing. Fast forward to couple of weeks ago when the girl I went to in that salon went on vacation and I had to wax by myself. Although I can wax pretty well at home (I did spend couple of teenage years in perfecting my technique) I wasn't pretty happy with the way it turned out. Shorter hairs were still there, and you can only wax one place so many times or the skin will become irritated.
While I was buying a new batch of wax I noticed that they also had sugar paste. Next day I went back and bought it. The brand name is Cleopatra and I got Strong-epil (which is recommended for beginners).
I have to say I was amazed by this product.
It takes some time to get the hang of it and to learn how to do it, but it has so many advantages compared to waxing.
-removing the hair is less painful, because sugar paste only attaches to hair and dead skin cells, not skin itself
-it can remove shorter hair if you use a thinner layer
-you can't burn yourself like with wax, because sugar paste doesn't acquire heating
-you'll have less ingrown hairs
-it's so easy to clean up, you can wash it off with warm water
So how do you use the paste?
It comes in a plastic box and you just need to remove a small amount of paste from the box with your fingers (or spatula that's provided). If it's warm outside this will be easy to do, but if it's cold you'll need to warm the paste up in a microwave or hot water. After you remove the paste it's time for sugaring. You simply apply it in opposite direction to hair growth and remove it in the same direction to hair growth, which is opposite form waxing. This way you'll get fewer ingrown hairs later on.
The skin has to be clean and completely dry. This is very important. If the skin is even a little bit wet, the moisture will melt the sugar and make it stick to the skin. It happened to me because I was sweating due to hot weather and me being very nervous so I had to apply powder. It's a trick I found online, when you see your sugar is sticking to the skin you just powder the area with baby powder and carry on. When you see the paste is getting a weird texture, or you are unable to remove it form the skin it means it's time to throw it away and get a new amount.
I was actually pretty happy with sugaring. Only bad thing is it is hard to do the areas you can't see well (calves, etc.). Also, if it's hot of you are sweating because you're nervous it will be more complicated. My next move will definitely be to find a good salon that does sugaring. It really makes the skin look nicer, and I even think the hair is growing slower.
Have you tried sugaring, how do you like it?
